The Neighborhood

The Southgate neighborhood of Portland comprises a portion of southward suburban extension of the city that sits directly along the historic wagon trails. Bounded to the west by the Interstate 205 bypass of downtown Portland, Southgate hosts a major retail strip that runs along the west side of the highway for over a mile and is an alternative to downtown shopping. SE 82nd Avenue, also supports several commercial enterprises and brings significant traffic numbers through the Southgate area. Here’s a list of some of the most notable amenities:

Southgate is located within the Portland metropolitan area, beyond Multnomah County, but within Clackamas County—the third most populated county in the state of Oregon. Southgate benefits from the recent economic growth of Clackamas County and its adjacency to Multnomah County and the rest of the Portland Metro. The area has strong clusters in retail, dining, advanced technology, software and media production, advanced metal manufacturing as well as health care and professional services. Clackamas County offers businesses the advantage of a major metropolitan city combined with the business advantages of a favorable tax structure.

Private automobiles comprise the primary means of transportation for the residents of Southgate. Light traffic in the neighborhoods and free parking everywhere make local driving easy. Southeast King Road bisects the area and provides quick access to 82nd and 99-East as well as Interstate 205. Locals who commute to downtown often choose public transit to avoid congestion and parking problems associated with Portland’s compact urban core. The Portland TriMet light rail and bus systems serve Southgate providing residents with access to the majority of the Portland metropolitan area via alternative public transportation options.
